How schools can get involved

Specially tailored sessions bring the dementia friendly message to primary and secondary schools across Wiltshire.

Young people are naturally very accepting of people living with dementia - perhaps because they too tend to live 'in the moment' and perhaps because they have fewer preconceptions about what dementia can mean.

Beyond Dementia has active partnerships with schools across Wiltshire. Children of all ages a regular visitors to our day clubs and we have provided dementia awareness sessions to pupils, and also to parent and staff groups.

The age-appropriate sessions have also been delivered at Brownie and Guide groups.

"Our fantastic link with Alzheimer’s Support has provided a unique opportunity for our children to see the impact of supporting their community and supporting a wonderful local charity. We are committed to becoming the first Dementia Friendly school in Trowbridge. The link has provided opportunities for children to visit the local Mill Street Club and spend time with members."

Why become dementia friendly?

We know that people living with dementia and their carers can feel isolated in their communities. Old friends and acquaintances may fall away following a diagnosis as people feel embarrassed about saying and doing the 'wrong thing'. People may lose confidence to the point where they struggle with activities that most take for granted like shopping, going to the bank or having their hair done. It doesn't mean they can't do these things, just that they may need extra support and understanding to carry on leading an active and independent life for as long as possible.
