Why Volunteer at Beyond Dementia
Volunteering with us is a great way to support people affected by dementia in your community while being part of a friendly team. Our volunteers often tell us it is one of the most rewarding things they have ever done. It also offers valuable opportunities to develop new skills, gain practical experience, and strengthen your CV.
Who can volunteer at Beyond Dementia?
Anyone over the age of 16 can volunteer. If you’re not sure please get in touch to discuss the kinds or roles that might suit you best.
What volunteering opportunities are there?
You can volunteer in our day clubs, activity groups (singing, exercise, art, memory cafes or outdoors/craft groups) at fundraising events or represent us as community ambassadors or volunteer trainers. You don’t have to limit yourself to just one role and please let us know about any special skills you think will be useful.
How much time do I have to give as a volunteer?
This depends on the role and how much time you wish to give. It could be a one-off event or an on-going weekly, fortnightly or monthly commitment.
What skills do I need to volunteer?
For most roles we just look for a friendly, non-judgemental manner, a willingness to listen, kindness, enthusiasm and commitment.
What will I get out of volunteering?
Volunteering is a great way to use your existing skills or further your skills and knowledge, as well as meet new people and gain confidence. And, it is also a good addition to your CV. Many volunteers get huge satisfaction out of making a positive difference to people living with dementia and their carers.
Will I be interviewed?
Most roles will involve an informal chat with our Volunteering Manager to help you find out more about Beyond Dementia, our services and ethos and where you would fit in best. Then you’ll have a trial session at your chosen setting where you will meet the staff who will support you while you volunteer, and other volunteers.
Will I receive training?
All our volunteers are invited to an online induction session including dementia awareness training. You’ll receive guidance and ongoing support in the setting so you’ll feel confident and supported when volunteering with us. There are also opportunities for further training, depending on the role.
What support will I receive?
We will make sure you have all the information and support you need to perform your role. The Volunteer Manager or a designated member of staff (eg day club manager, fundraising manager or group facilitator) will be the main point of contact so you know who to go to with any questions or concerns.
Do you offer work experience / internship placements?
Yes. We welcome school, college, and longer-term university students who can complete placements in our day clubs or other services. Please get in touch to discuss.
Do you offer corporate volunteering opportunities?
We welcome corporate partnerships which include volunteering opportunities as part of the programme. Please get in touch to find out more.
