Support in your local community

Volunteers are a vital part of our 35+ community activity groups. We have a group within 5 miles of most communities in Wiltshire so you should find one that is local to you.

Taking part in a social group activity is stimulating, uplifting and enhances well-being for people living with dementia and family carers alike.

Some of our groups are weekly, some fortnightly and some more occasional. Activities range from singing at Music for the Mind, gentle exercise at Movement for the Mind, to art groups, outdoors groups and memory cafes, and some groups combine more than one activity.

Volunteers do not need to be experts as we always have a professional leader and a group facilitator present - just willing to have a go and encourage others!

Hear from our volunteers

"Seeing people 'come to life' with the music is amazingly rewarding. And I've met some wonderful friends here, too."

Alison Music for the Mind volunteer

"You leave each week knowing that you have been part of something extraordinary."

Rosie Community group volunteer

“I see a lot of my husband in the club members and only wish he could have come here. The service they get is invaluable and I see how much the families appreciate it. That’s why I volunteer. I love being part of the team, it feels so worthwhile.”

Jean Old Silk Works club volunteer

"I’ve been a carer and know how important it was to get a break for both for myself and for Mum. Beyond Dementia provides a vital service. My family and I received wonderful support when we needed it, it’s great to be able to pass that on."

Janet Mill Street club volunteer

"Caring is often seen as traditionally a woman’s role but here the volunteer role is all about making connections and companionship. We have a group of men here on a Friday who particularly enjoy practical activities and I tend to support with that – it’s nice for the men to have another bloke to chat to."

Why Volunteer at Beyond Dementia

Volunteering with us is a great way to support people affected by dementia in your community while being part of a friendly team. Our volunteers often tell us it is one of the most rewarding things they have ever done. It also offers valuable opportunities to develop new skills, gain practical experience, and strengthen your CV.

Who can volunteer at Beyond Dementia?

Anyone over the age of 16 can volunteer. If you’re not sure please get in touch to discuss the kinds or roles that might suit you best.

What volunteering opportunities are there?

You can volunteer in our day clubs, activity groups (singing, exercise, art, memory cafes or outdoors/craft groups) at fundraising events or represent us as community ambassadors or volunteer trainers. You don’t have to limit yourself to just one role and please let us know about any special skills you think will be useful.

How much time do I have to give as a volunteer?

This depends on the role and how much time you wish to give. It could be a one-off event or an on-going weekly, fortnightly or monthly commitment.

What skills do I need to volunteer?

For most roles we just look for a friendly, non-judgemental manner, a willingness to listen, kindness, enthusiasm and commitment.
