Paul and Laura's story

“We feel like we are amongst friends when we attend the group and I cannot begin to tell you how much that helps me too."

This year, Paul and Laura Willis joined Beyond Dementia's Kennet Muddy Boots group - a welcoming space for people living with dementia and their family carers who love being outdoors. From enjoying wildlife to visiting museums and open gardens, the group offers plenty of opportunities to connect and explore together.

Paul’s diagnosis of Alzheimer's has brought its challenges, particularly in finding social activities where he feels comfortable and engaged.

Laura said: "We were encouraged to try Muddy Boots - and we’re so glad we did because Paul has found a place where he feels accepted and treated as ‘normal’.

"The staff and volunteers are incredibly kind and welcoming, making Paul feel good and that he fits in."

A family experience

“We also like the fact that Frankie (our dog and Paul's best friend) can come to some events and he has loved visiting different places with us – The Piggery, Rhododendron Walk and the Walled Garden at Bowood and the History Centre at Pewsey.

"Bringing our baby grandson, William, to the group sessions has also been such a lovely experience. We’ve really enjoyed sharing these moments together, it's been wonderful for us as a family."

How Laura is supported

Laura has found immense value in connecting with others facing similar challenges and has formed friendships within the group. She said: “By talking to others in similar circumstances for support and advice, we feel as though we have made friends within the group.

“I really appreciate the support from the team and volunteers who are aware that sometimes we need longer and don’t do well being hurried."

Looking ahead

Paul and Laura are looking forward to joining Beyond Dementia's new Walking Boots group launching in January 2026, alongside their Muddy Boots sessions. Walking Boots, inspired by the success of Muddy Boots, will be a friendly walking group for people living with dementia and their carers, offering gentle walks, fresh air - and Wiltshire’s beautiful landscapes.

Laura said: ‘Paul really values the sessions, and I think he’d adore Walking Boots — with Frankie in tow of course!’”
